Your wedding dress is more than just fabric and lace, it’s the gown you’ll wear for one of the most unforgettable days of your life. But here’s the truth: even the most beautiful gown straight off the rack usually isn’t a perfect fit right away. That’s where alterations come in.
At Laurel&Lace, we always tell our brides that alterations aren’t about changing the dress, it’s about tailoring it so it looks like it was designed just for you. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why Alterations Are Essential
Wedding gowns are crafted to standard sizes, but every bride’s body is beautifully unique. Alterations ensure:
- The dress hugs you in all the right places.
- The hemline is perfect for your height and shoes.
- You can move, sit, and dance comfortably all day.
Even small tweaks can make a world of difference, transforming a beautiful gown into your gown.
The Most Common Alterations
Every bride’s needs are different, but some alterations are more common than others:
- Hemming: Adjusting the length so your gown just grazes the floor (or shows off your shoes).
- Taking in or letting out: Perfecting the fit around your bust, waist, or hips.
- Straps & sleeves: Tightening, loosening, or reshaping for comfort and style.
- Bustle: Adding discreet hooks or buttons so you can lift your train for the reception.
- Neckline adjustments: Sometimes brides want a subtle change to make the dress feel more “them.”
When to Schedule Alterations
For most cases we recommend three fittings:
- First fitting (about 2–3 months before your wedding): The seamstress pins the gown and makes the initial adjustments.
- Second fitting (about 4–6 weeks before): The gown is close to finished, and you can practice moving, sitting, and walking.
- Final fitting (about 1–2 weeks before): The dress should fit like a glove, with any last tiny tweaks done before you take it home.
The number of fittings depends on the amount of alterations and changes to body from the delivery of the dress to when it is taken to alterations. If minimal alterations are needed, even one fitting may be enough.
Our partner seamstress, JC Alterations, only a few minutes from our salon will take care of our customers ensuring our brides have the perfect experience during their fittings.
What to Bring to Your Fittings
To get the most accurate adjustments, always bring:
- Your wedding shoes (heel height affects hemline).
- The undergarments you’ll wear on your wedding day.
- Any accessories you’ve chosen (veil, belt, jewelry) if you want to see the full look.
Budgeting for Alterations
Alterations are not usually included in the price of the gown. The cost can vary depending on how many changes you need, but it’s smart to set aside a few hundred dollars in your budget just for tailoring. Remember, it’s an investment in looking and feeling flawless. At Laurel&Lace, we cover basic alteration costs that are done through our partner tailor, JC Alterations.
