What to Ask Before Ordering Your Wedding Dress

Finding a gown you love is a wonderful moment. But before you say yes and place the order, it helps to understand what happens next. A few clear questions can make the process feel calm and give you a better picture of your full bridal timeline.

At Laurel & Lace in Sandy Springs, we believe a confident yes is an informed yes. Here are the questions worth asking before ordering your wedding dress.

1. What size will be ordered?

Wedding dress sizing does not always match the size you wear in everyday clothing. Each designer may use a different size chart, so the number on the order is not a judgment about your body. It is simply the size that best fits that designer’s measurements.

Ask how your measurements are being considered and whether the gown will be ordered in a standard size. It is also helpful to ask which measurements matter most for the silhouette you chose. A fitted gown may be ordered with the bust, waist, and hip measurements in mind, while a fuller skirt may give you more flexibility through the lower half of the dress.

2. What color and fabric details are included?

The gown you tried on may be available in more than one color combination. Before ordering, confirm the exact shade of the lining, lace, beading, or other visible details. A dress described as ivory may look different from a gown with a bright white lining or a nude underlayer.

This is a small detail that matters when you are coordinating your veil, shoes, jewelry, and the overall feeling of your wedding day. If you have a venue with warm candlelight, an outdoor garden ceremony, or a bright ballroom reception, ask how the color may read in those settings.

3. When should the gown arrive?

Most made-to-order gowns typically take about 12 to 16 weeks. That is the production and delivery window, not the entire time you need before your wedding. Your dress will still need to be checked, prepared for fitting, and altered for your specific measurements.

For that reason, brides are encouraged to shop about 6 to 9 months before the wedding. Before placing the order, share your wedding date and ask for the expected arrival window. If your date is closer than the usual timeline, ask what options may be available, including whether a rush order is possible. Do not assume a faster timeline without confirming the details with the boutique and designer.

4. What is included in the purchase?

Ask whether the order includes only the gown or whether any additional pieces are being purchased separately. Depending on the designer and style, a veil, overskirt, sleeves, detachable straps, or other accessories may not be part of the dress order.

This is also the right time to confirm the total gown price, taxes, and any other known costs connected to the order. Your wedding dress budget should account for the full bridal look, not just the number on the gown’s tag. Having the details in front of you makes it easier to make a decision that feels exciting and financially comfortable.

5. What are the payment and order policies?

Before you place an order, ask how payments are scheduled and when the order is considered final. You should understand the deposit or payment amount due, the remaining balance, and which payment methods are accepted. It is equally important to ask about cancellation, changes, and special-order policies before signing anything.

These questions are not awkward. They are part of making a thoughtful purchase. Write down the answers or review the information in your order paperwork so you can return to it later without trying to remember every detail from an emotional appointment.

6. How will alterations be handled?

Even when a gown is ordered in the best available size, most brides need some alterations to create the right fit. Plan for roughly 4 to 8 weeks for alterations, depending on the work your dress needs and the availability of your chosen professional.

Laurel & Lace does not currently provide alterations in-house, but the boutique can refer brides to trusted local partners when applicable. Ask when you should schedule your first appointment and what to bring. If you are getting married in Atlanta, Sandy Springs, or nearby, planning this step early can give you more flexibility with local seamstresses as your date approaches.

7. What should you do after ordering?

Once your order is placed, keep your paperwork and note the expected delivery window. If your contact information or wedding date changes, let the boutique know. It is also wise to avoid making major accessory decisions based on memory alone. Save photos and notes from your appointment so you can build the rest of your look around the gown you actually ordered.

Most importantly, let yourself enjoy the moment. You do not need to solve every wedding detail in the same afternoon. Ask the practical questions, understand your timeline, and then take a breath. Saying yes should feel both beautiful and grounded.
